The Essence of Herbalism Level II Apprentice Program
is designed to provide the serious student with a
strong, supervised, experiential, learning opportunity. The practicing
herbalist will refine his/her skills and develop a more in-depth
understanding of the principles and practices of herbalism and herbal
medicine.
1. Each workshop is designed as a complete study. 2. Daily workshop schedules include 1 1/2 hours of hands-on identification of plants using field identification keys. 3. One full hour will be dedicated to an intensive study of one herb chosen from among the most prominent and/or controversial herbs in use today. 4. Certificate students will be given monthly field assignments to complete, and will be required to give written and/or oral reports on the assigned work. They will be tested each month on the materials covered the previous month. Certificate students submit work and give presentations between 4 pm - 5 pm.

Continuing Studies in... Advanced Plant
Identification: We will spend time improving our identification
skills throughout the plants’ growth cycles and learning botanical
characteristics of plants that are specific to each family by which they are
grouped and classified includes plant morphology and plant anatomy. |

Michael Ford is
a herbalist, botanist, natural product chemist, and artist. He is the owner
of Apollo Herbs, a herb company which he founded in 1991, after completing
an apprenticeship with master herbalist, Rosemary Gladstar. Previously,
Michael studied Painting & Illustration at The Rhode Island School of Design
from 1986-1989, then he began learning about herbs. In 1993 Michael began
teaching about herbs. Each year he offers various herbal education programs
for aspiring herbalists in Rhode Island and its surrounding communities. In
1998 Michael earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany, a Bachelor of
Arts in Biology. In 2000 he earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Classics from the University of Rhode Island. In 2002, he
earned his Master of Science degree in Pharmacognosy & Natural Product
Chemistry, and in 2007 his Master of Arts in Education, all at the University of Rhode
Island. He brings over eighteen years of
experience and professional training to his teaching. |

The Level II Apprentice program requires a
serious commitment from both students and teachers. Though it is in reality
one weekend of each month, it is still a
totally captivating and encompassing study. The requirements for this
