astringency as well as diuretic & urinary antiseptic properties. It is
taken for cystitis, bladder & urinary tract infections.
Dandelion
The roots & leaves are bitter tonics and
have a strong diuretic action, stimulating urination as well as having
high iron, potassium and inulin content. Dandelion has been called an
alterative or "blood-cleansing" herb, used in many formulas for
detoxification & urinary treatments. It decreases trhe puffiness and
swelling of edema and provides a tonic effect for the kidneys & liver.
Yarrow Leaves have many
uses due to their diuretic, diaphoretic, urinary antiseptic, &
hemostatic properties. They contain sesquiterpenoid lactones and an
azulene-containing essential oil, as well as flavonoids, which are known
to have antispasmodic & anti-inflammatory properties.
Cleavers act as a tonic
to the lymphatic system, with alterative and diuretic properties. It is
useful in treatment of cystitis, other urinary complaints & contains
asperuloside, galotannic & citric acids.
Cranberries These
bitter, tart fruits contain saccharides that prevent bacteria such as
E. coli from adhering to bladder walls, preventing urinary tract
infections. They also contain the phenolic gly-coside, arbutin, known
for its astringency as well as diuretic & urinary antiseptic properties.
Marshmallow Root
is known for its demulcent properties due to its content of muco-polysaccharides,
often referred to as mucilage. Marshmallow, like most demulcents, is
very soothing to inflamed mucus membrane linings of the urinary tract,
especially for urethritis and burning, painful urination.
Chickweed is an edible
weed used for its demulcent effects, containing flavonoids & viamin C.
Juniper Berries
have been used as an antiseptic in
urinary complaints such as cystitis. The essential oil, which is used to
flavor gin, contains terpinen-4-ol which stimulates the kidney nephrons
by increasing the glomerular filtration rate in the kidneys, providing a
diuretic effect. Juniper should not be taken in large doses, or be taken
by pregnant women or by those with kidney disease. |
